The purpose of a riser is bring the lid up close to ground level so that you do not need to dig down a foot or more to get to your septic tank lid. Modern risers are made of a thick plastic material and look much like a fire ring. The plastic culvert like material is shipped to us in 16 to 30 foot lengths. We in turn cut the risers for customers to the exact size they require. To understand what length is right for you, simply measure from the top of your septic tank up to about three to six inches from the surface and that is the length you would request. The cement septic lids rest on top of the riser and then can be covered with a couple of inches of dirt. If you do not want any dirt on your lid, then your measurement would be to about three inches from the surface when using a three inch thick concrete lid. Risers can be further secured to the top of the septic tank by buying a bag or two of dry concrete and pouring it in the outside of the hole you dug to insert the plastic riser. You do not need to add water to the concrete as it will harden up from the moisture in the soil.
Buying a new septic lid is a great idea to ensure that you have your system properly
covered as required by law. Traditional lids are made of concrete for durability and
tend to discourage kids from removing them due to their weight. Plastic lids are also available,
but are less secure as they can be removed.

A Historic Look Back:
As you can see, risers used to be made of heavy concrete
and were difficult to put into place. The new modern material is durable and lightweight.
